Is a Breast Reduction Procedure Right for You? MARK A. SCHUSTERMAN, MD, FACS

Many women who undergo a breast reduction procedure or reduction mammoplasty do so for various health or personal reasons. There are psychological reasons as well, and they are usually very valid.

Disproportionate Bodies

Some women experience their breasts growing too large compared to their body’s proportions. They get breast reductions to even out their body’s proportions and are often going for a more natural breast job.

Other women experience pain in their back neck or upper body. It has nothing to do with internal health problems; their breasts are simply too heavy.

If your breasts start to cause you discomfort, it can be hard to do your work or care for your family. Heavy breasts often lead to poor posture and more uncomfortable issues.

Inability to Operate or Perform Daily Activities Well

Another common case that we see is women who are dissatisfied with their breasts because the weight causes them to droop. Their nipples gravitate lower, and either both or one breast is significantly longer. Women who want to reshape their breasts to become more equal often decide to have breast reconstruction.

Other women have a very hard time sleeping due to the discomfort that heavy breasts bring.

When your breasts start to prevent you from normal healthy activities such as sleeping or physical exercise, it’s possible that you are a good candidate for breast reduction.

Cosmetic Surgery for a Boost of Self-Confidence

Another common problem is women feeling self-conscious or lacking confidence because of their breast size.

If you are one of these women, perhaps you have experienced a reluctance to participate in social activities or wear certain clothing because of the size of your breasts.

This may sound to others like a trivial thing — but for you, it is a deciding factor in many of your daily activities or appointments. And that’s no fun.

Deciding on Breast Augmentation: Questions to Ask

Do you feel held back from doing the things you would like to pursue because of the size of your breasts? Are you unable to participate in many things you would like to do normally? Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Is back pain causing you trouble?

These are some things to ask yourself when deciding on getting plastic surgery to resolve these issues.

You may also suffer from rashes or infection because of restricted skin due to the size of your breasts. This can easily be resolved with breast reduction surgery. Improve your quality of life, comfort and clothing fit when you decide to choose this type of procedure.

What to Expect

During the procedure, your surgeon will perform general anesthesia. Then, he or she will make a few incisions: one around the areola, a second one from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast, and lastly a third incision to follow the natural curve of your breast crease.

The next step is to reduce the breast tissue, then reattach the skin. Typically, the operation will take around three to five hours.

After your breasts are stitched and wrapped in gauze, you will be allowed to go home. A surgical bra helps the healing. But expect at least a week for recovery and around a month before you can start lifting heavy objects again. There may be some scarring, but this usually fades with time.

When considering any type of plastic surgery, it is important to consult with your surgeon first. You can ask all the questions you need to, get clarification, and know what to expect before, during and after your operation.
