One size does not fit all when it comes to acne treatment

You can never expect to be free from acne as it is a skin condition that affects teenagers to adults. While there were previously not many acne treatment options available, today, you have a range of treatment options to choose from to treat your acne condition.

The most basic treatment option for mild acne attacks is antibacterial acne treatments. It consists of over the counter medications, acne creams and lotions that have benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. These products destroy acne causing bacteria and prevent clogging of skin pores by removing dead skin cells. Clogged skin pores tend to accumulate bacteria and intensify the acne attack.

Tablets
As acne is caused by hormonal imbalances in the body, especially in women’s body, it is possible to get rid of acne using hormonal replacement tablets. However this option should be discussed with your doctor before starting it.

Injection
Even injection of cortisone injections in the infected area helps in reducing acne inflammation. However this treatment too should be discussed with a dermatologist as it has its share of side effects.

Skin resurfacing
Microdermabrasion helps in clearing away dead acne skin cells and dirt to give fresh skin. This fresh skin absorbs acne medications more readily to help you quickly get rid of acne. Microdermabrasion is also popularly used for acne scar removal.

Laser treatment
Acne laser treatments are used to burn away pimples and destroys acne forming bacteria found in the skin pores. Though one of the best treatments for acne options available, laser acne treatment can lead to severe scarring, skin discoloration and skin dryness. This option should not be resorted to unless your dermatologist suggests it.

It is based on the severity of your acne that your dermatologist determines the acne treatments that work for you. Sometimes, it may take a combination of two treatment options for maximum relief from acne.

Healthy lifestyle
People prone to acne breakouts should resort to facials or steaming to clear up the problem. This is not an actual acne treatment option, but more of a preventive measure. With regular facials and steaming, you can remove dead skin and keep skin pores open.

Besides acne treatment, it is necessary to get a good night’s sleep, drink at least eight glasses of water a day, reduce stress and follow a balanced diet for acne control.
