Breast Augmentation Recovery In Houston, TX

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular and transformative cosmetic surgical procedures available to women.

With breast augmentation surgery, the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts can be corrected to give women the physique they desire. With Dr. Schusterman in Houston, Texas, this means increasing the size and volume of the breasts as well as giving the shape of the breasts a more rounded and aesthetically pleasing appearance with the use of breast implants (made of silicone or saline) or fat transfer..

However, many people mistakenly believe that once the surgery is performed, they will immediately be able to show off their results in comfort.

However, the truth is that the procedure itself is only the first step in achieving the desired breast appearance. Your breast augmentation recovery is just as important as the actual procedure because you need to make sure that you are recovering correctly.

The recovery period for breast augmentation surgery varies with each patient and is dependent on the techniques used, the extent of the surgery, and whether other procedures, like breast lift surgery, were combined with the augmentation.

However, to help you understand what to expect for your breast augmentation recovery, here is some information

How to Prepare for Your Breast Augmentation?

As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, your consultation is vital. At your breast augmentation consultation, you will be able to discuss your aesthetic goals with Dr. Schusterman, and he will be able to evaluate your condition to help you choose which technique, implant type, and implant location is right for you.

At your consultation, Dr. Schusterman will also be able to answer any questions you may have about the procedure and explain what to expect.

What Should You Ask Your Surgeon During Your Consultation?

At your consultation, it is important that you have a good idea of what questions you want to ask Dr. Schusterman about your surgery and recovery.

Here are some questions you may want to ask:

  • How long will the procedure take?
  • Where will the procedure take place?
  • Should I consider breast implants or fat transfer?
  • Where will the implants be placed?
  • What are the benefits of the different implant materials?
  • How long will the surgery take to complete?
  • How long will the recovery period be?
  • What should I avoid after my surgery?
  • What medication will I be prescribed?
  • What kinds of dressings or bandages will I have?
  • What do I need to know about my sutures?
  • How soon can I shower or bathe after my breast augmentation?
  • How long will I be off of work?
  • When can I resume normal activity and exercise?
  • When do I return for my follow-up appointment?

How to Prepare Your Recovery Space?

It is important to understand that you will be limited in what you’ll be able to do after your breast augmentation. Because of this, you need to make sure that your home is prepared for anything you may need during your recovery.

In the weeks leading up to your breast augmentation surgery, we strongly recommend that you:

  • Stop all nicotine use, including smoking, vaping, and Nicorette gum. Smoking increases the chances of complications during and after your surgery.
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and NSAIDs. These medications can increase the chance of bleeding during surgery.
  • Stop or adjust certain medication or supplement use. It is important to mention any current medications and supplements during your consultation.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption and make sure that you refrain from all alcohol consumption during the days before and after your procedure.

Before your surgery, we recommend that you organize your living space by:

  • Organizing and establishing a recovery zone that allows you easy access to everything that you may need, including pillows, blankets, entertainment options, water, and food
  • Making sure that someone is available to help you with anything you may need, especially for the first 24 to 48 hours (this includes making sure someone is there to watch your children and pets to allow you the chance to rest and recover)
  • Ensuring that you have a ride to and from the surgery center
  • Shopping for any food that you may need during the weeks after your procedure
  • Preparing healthy meals ahead of time to keep you from worrying about cooking
  • Filling your prescriptions ahead of your surgery

What Should You Do the Night Before Your Breast Augmentation Surgery?

On the night before your breast augmentation:

  • Ensure that you have filled out all necessary paperwork
  • Ensure that you have someone to drive you to and from the surgery center
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight (except water)
  • Get to sleep early so that you are well rested for the procedure

What Should You Do on the Day of Your Breast Augmentation?

On the morning of your breast augmentation:

  • Do not drink or eat anything (besides water)
  • Ensure that someone is able to stay with you during your first night after surgery

What Can You Expect After Your Breast Augmentation Surgery?

As mentioned above, the exact breast augmentation recovery period varies for each patient, below is a general timeline for what you can expect after your procedure:

Day 1

Breast augmentation surgery generally takes one to two hours to complete. During that time, you will be sedated under general anesthesia. When you wake from the anesthesia, you will likely feel groggy and tired. You may also feel some tightness in your breasts as well as pain and discomfort. This is completely normal.

It is important that you rest as much as you can during the first 24 hours. Additionally, you will want to drink plenty of water and take your prescribed medication when directed. You will also need to make sure that you are sleeping in a position in which your chest is elevated.

Days 2 and 3

You will still feel fatigued during the first few days after your surgery. You will notice swelling and bruising in your breasts. Make sure that you are eating healthy foods and continuing to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. You will likely not have much mobility during these days.

Additionally, make sure to continue taking your prescribed medications (which will include pain medication and antibiotics).

You will need to wear your surgical bra at all times during your recovery, and do not shower until you are cleared to do so by Dr. Schusterman.

Week 1

You should start feeling a little more normal during the latter part of your first week, though you will still feel tired and sore. It is important that you continue to take care of your body by eating and drinking correctly and allowing yourself the rest it needs.

You will not be able to return to work at this time. Instead, your priority should be allowing your body to heal itself. It is also important that you change your bandages and dressings regularly to prevent the risk of infection.

Week 2

Most patients are able to return to work during their second week, though this largely depends on the type of job you have and the work you do. You should refrain from any and all strenuous activity, including lifting anything of weight.

Continue to eat and drink right and wear your surgical bra.

Weeks 3 through 6

One of the best things that you can do during the next several weeks is allow yourself to get up and move, though slowly. You should still not engage in any strenuous activities, but light stretching and short walks are beneficial to improving blood circulation, which helps you recover quicker.

As you get to weeks five and six, you can engage in more low-impact activities, though you should make sure that you don’t put any stress on your incisions.

Continue to eat and drink right and wear your surgical bra.

Month 2 and Beyond

Depending on Dr. Schusterman’s recommendations, you should be able to return to your normal, daily activities during this point in your recovery, including more strenuous exercises.

You should see your swelling decrease, and your bruises should be faded to allow you a chance to see your stunning results.

What Signs of Complications Should You Watch Out For?

Though rare, any plastic surgery procedure carries a risk of complications. Breast augmentation is no different. It is important that you keep a close watch on your health and the surgery site during the days and weeks after your surgery.

If you experience any of these side effects, make sure to contact Dr. Schusterman immediately:

  • Numbness
  • Bleeding at the incision sites
  • Persistent pain
  • Blood clotting
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Infection
  • Fever (over 101º)

What Type of Exercise Should You Do After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Light exercise is one of the most effective ways to help improve your results and speed up your recovery. When you exercise, your blood circulates throughout your body, bringing oxygen to the areas that are healing.

As mentioned above, it is important that you do not engage in any strenuous activities; however, light, low-impact exercises and activities can be very beneficial.

It is very important that you do not do anything that requires you to raise your arms above your head, as this will put unneeded stress on your incisions and may affect the way your breasts heal.

During the first few weeks, you will want to limit your exercise to light stretching and yoga, slow walks, and time on the stationary bike.

After a few weeks, Dr. Scusterman will clear you to return to your normal exercises, such as jogging, dancing, and weight lifting.

How Can You Manage Pain After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Most patients only experience mild to moderate discomfort after their breast augmentation. It is not rare, however, to experience some pain after their procedure. Any pain and discomfort can be alleviated with prescription or over-the-counter medications and cold compresses.

If pain persists or increases, it is vital that you contact Dr. Schusterman immediately.

Make sure that you follow Dr. Schusterman’s instructions and only use the medication provided.

Lifestyle Tips After Your Breast Augmentation

Your breast augmentation results will last as long as your breast implants last, which is generally about 20 years. While this time frame is not guaranteed, there are plenty of things you can do to improve and prolong your results. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can make sure that your rejuvenated results are long lasting.

Here are some ways to make sure your results last as long as possible:

  • Maintain a stable weight
  • Keep active
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Quit smoking
  • Drink alcohol in moderation

Additionally, pregnancy will affect your natural breast tissue (though not the implants themselves). You may desire a secondary breast surgery (such as breast revision or breast lift surgery) to adjust the results following pregnancy.
