5 Breast Augmentation Myths You Should Know

Breast augmentation is very common and has grown in popularity over the past decade. However, like any type of plastic surgery, the surgery has its share of myths and misconceptions which are born from rare and isolated instances, outdated information and journalism.

Presented by Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Schusterman, here are the top 5 common Breast Augmentation myths you should know and understand why they are myths.

Myth no.1: Breast implants are not meant for older women

Fact: This is not true as women of all ages can undergo a breast implant. Patients just have to discuss the surgery in detail with their plastic surgeon as women in their forties are no more an inferior candidate for the surgery than a 20-year woman.

Myth no.2: You have to replace breast implants every decade

Fact: There is no fixed time for breast implant replacement as this depends on the individual patient. While some patients have to replace their implants after a few years’ time, others can wait for a lifetime to replace their implants. So the decision for a replacement depends on various medical variables and the patient.

Myth no.3: Breast implants can lead to cancer

Fact: This is not true as there is no scientific link between breast implants and cancer. Though some people claim that implants do lead to cancer, there are no studies validating the theory. Moreover, the implants used today are all FDA approved safe, including the publicized silicone gel implants.

Myth no.4: You cannot wear underwire bras if you have breast implants

Fact: No, you can wear underwire bras if you have breast implants as breast implants may sag with time, if they are not properly supported. Like naturally large breasts, breast implants get the best support with underwire bras.

The reason for this myth is many women with breast implants don’t feel comfortable wearing underwire bras. However this discomfort can be eliminated if you wait till you have completely healed to wear underwire bras.

Myth no.5: You cannot have a mammogram if you have breast implants

Fact: You can have a mammogram if you have breast implants in fact, if you use the displacement technique for the mammography; you get better results because of the silicone breast implants.

So breast augmentation is basically a safe procedure; it only has its share of risks and side effects, like all the different types of plastic surgery. You can get more prepared for your surgery if you prepare yourself for it by clearing all your doubts and myths about breast augmentation.
