Gravity is a law of physics. As long as you are on this planet, the force of gravity will pull you towards the earth. That includes your breasts.
As we age, the elasticity in our skin diminishes, stretching the skin and amplifying the effects of gravity on your body. A breast lift (mastopexy) helps fight the effects of gravity by reshaping and firming the breast by removing excess skin.
Unlike breast augmentation, where implants are added beneath the skin to increase the size of the breasts, a breast lift takes your existing breast tissue and restores it to where it was years before.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of breast lifts performed in the U.S. since 2000 has increased by 70% - that’s faster than the growth rate of breast augmentation! So, why the sudden popularity? Part of the reason is, understandably, the results. With one surgery, you could have perky, balanced breasts and a more contoured figure.
Another reason is perception. While breast augmentation involves the addition of an implant, a breast lift involves no addition, only subtraction of excess tissue. We all want to look like our natural selves, and there’s nothing “fake” about removing a little excess skin for an overall appearance that increases your confidence.
For many women, the decision to have a breast lift comes when they are through breastfeeding. Breastfeeding causes breasts to swell and stretch, and that often leads to a “deflated” look once milk production ceases. A breast lift can revitalize your breasts and restore your youthful look without implants! It is important to note that women who choose this option should do so only after they are reasonably sure their family is complete and they will not be breastfeeding again, as breastfeeding can reverse the effects of a breast lift.
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery recommends conducting a simple evaluation to determine if you might benefit from a breast lift. Consider the position of your nipples when not wearing a bra. If your nipples point downward, a breast lift surgery would be an effective method to address the shape and position of your breasts.
The first step in your breast lift surgery process is a private consultation with Dr. Mark Schusterman, either in our Houston office or online through our virtual consultation program. During your consultation for a breast lift Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Schusterman will sit down with you and answer all of your questions regarding the procedure. He will also measure your chest and torso. That data, along with your medical history and your skin’s thickness and elasticity, will help determine a proportionate bust shape and size as the goal for the surgery.
Depending on what you want your final look to be, we may also recommend doing a breast augmentation surgery, in addition to your breast lift. Our breast augmentation page offers a detailed breakdown of that procedure and frequently asked questions. Dr. Schusterman will also be available during your consultation to answer any questions you may have about adding a breast augmentation to your breast lift.
Before your surgery, you will want to make sure you arrange for someone to pick you up from the hospital. A breast lift is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. This means that, while you won’t have to spend the night in the hospital, you will need to have someone take you home following your procedure.
On the day of surgery, Dr. Schusterman will meet with you and go over the surgery with you in advance. Then, you will be placed under general anesthesia by our talented and board-certified anesthesiologist.
During your surgery, Dr. Schusterman elevates the entire breast, relocating the nipple and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). He removes excess skin from the lower breast and reshapes the remaining skin for a natural, youthful appearance. If you have chosen to have breast implants added to your surgery, that process will be completed as well. You can read up on what’s involved in that surgery here.
The breast lift procedure usually takes two hours to complete. After a short recovery period and following a post-op analysis, you will be discharged from the hospital and allowed to go home to begin the recovery process.
As part of your surgery, Dr. Schusterman will give you specific, personalized instructions on how to prepare for your surgery and maximize your recovery.
He has found that patients who stick to these guidelines have much better outcomes.
Generally, we suggest limiting most upper body activity for 7 to 10 days following surgery. Pain and swelling are normal for the first few days, and it is important to follow Dr. Schusterman’s guidelines and to leave your bandages on.
We will schedule a post-op follow-up appointment with you as part of the surgery. During that check-up, Dr. Schusterman will check on the healing process and provide a soft support bra for you to wear during recovery. There will be scarring at the incision site, but that should fade and become less noticeable over time.
Dr. Schusterman is a skilled surgeon who has pioneered multiple techniques in restorative surgeries. He makes sure that any incisions are as small as possible to minimize scarring. Breast lift surgery usually lasts 10 to 15 years, at which point gravity again stretches the skin and creates more sagging.
